A 76-year-old woman, who was attacked in her home in Wishaw by four men, was the mother and grandmother of two men acquitted of murdering an Asian man in 1998, it is understood. Four men are being sought by police after a horrific attack on a 76-year-old woman in her Lanarkshire home.
Surjit Singh Chhokar was killed outside his girlfriend's home in Overtown. Mary Coulter is being treated in hospital after the men burst into her home in Overtown, near Wishaw, in the early hours of Thursday morning.
The woman, named locally as Mary Coulter, suffered serious head injuries, cuts to her face and two broken arms in the attack on Thursday. Her son and grandson were among three men charged more than a decade ago with the murder of an Asian waiter.
Police said it was not robbery and they are looking at why she was targeted. Surjit Singh Chhokar was killed outside his girlfriend's home in Overtown in 1998. No-one was ever convicted.
Neighbours of Mrs Coulter said they were shocked at the savage attack on the widow, who lived alone in a ground floor flat in a cul-de -sac.

The four men - all white and with their faces obscured - smashed down the front door at about 05:20 on Thursday.
