The BBC has announced Midlands Today presenter Suzanne Virdee has left the corporation.

Ms Virdee joined the show in 2001 and took over as one of the main presenters the following year.

She had previously worked at a number of newspapers in the region as well as for Central Television.

Ms Virdee said it had been an "honour" to work on the show. A BBC spokesperson said they were sorry that the presenter had "decided to leave".

A statement from Ms Virdee read: "It is with great sadness that I will not be continuing my long association with Midlands Today.

"I have had many happy years co-presenting the programme and I am proud and privileged to have helped make the programme one of the most watched regional news programmes in the country.

"It's been an honour and a privilege to bring the news to the region where I was born and brought up and I really am extremely grateful for that opportunity and the support I have had from viewers."

A BBC spokesperson said: "We are sorry that Suzanne has decided to leave Midlands Today. We wish her all the best for the future."
