Respect's George Galloway has claimed he has won a "sensational victory" in the Bradford West by-election. Respect Party candidate George Galloway has won the Bradford West by-election, taking the seat from Labour by more than 10,000 votes.
He tweeted his prediction as counting continued in the by-election triggered by the resignation of former Labour MP Marsha Singh on health grounds. Mr Galloway, expelled from Labour in 2003, said it was the "most sensational victory" in by-election history.
He held the seat in the 2010 general election with a majority of 5,763. The by-election was triggered after Labour's Marsha Singh, who had a majority of 5,763 at the 2010 General Election, resigned on health grounds.
Respect leader Salma Yaqoob told the Press Association she had heard Labour had conceded victory, but there has been no confirmation of this. Labour had held the seat since 1974, except for a brief period in the 1980s.
Mr Galloway won the by-election with 18,341 votes, pushing Labour candidate Imran Hussein into second with 8,201.
