The incident comes after the Costa Concordia liner ran into a reef and capsized off the Tuscan island of Giglio in January leaving 25 people dead and seven more missing and presumed dead. The stricken ship was drifting in the Sulu Sea about 70 miles south of the Philippines' Tubbataha Reef, the Philippines' coastguard spokesman Lieutenant Commander Algier Ricafrente said. The Sulu Sea lies between the Philippines and the island of Borneo, which is divided between Malaysia and Indonesia.
Six weeks later another Costa cruise ship, the Costa Allegra, was left adrift off the Seychelles in the Indian Ocean after fire broke out on board. It was the latest in a series of accidents affecting luxury cruise liners since January, when the Costa Concordia capsized off the coast of Italy, killing 25 people, with a further seven missing, presumed dead.
