Motorists in North East warned over bad weather Gales cause North East power cuts

Drivers have been advised to take care after severe weather warnings were issued for the north-east of England. Around 10,000 properties in the north east of England are without power because of problems caused by the wintry weather.
There were gale-force winds across the region, as well as heavy rain and sleet, and snow on higher ground. Gales have brought down power lines in the region and engineers say they are dealing with about 200 faults.
Travel was disrupted, with delays on the East Coast Main Line between Newcastle and Scotland. Travellers were also warned to take care as snow on high ground threatened treacherous conditions.
There were also a number of power cuts around the region. Northern Power Grid said engineers were working to repair a "higher than usual" number of faults. There were also delays on the East Coast Main Line between Newcastle and Scotland.
The A66 in County Durham was closed eastbound close to the border with Cumbria due to at least one jackknifed lorry. Some homes in Shotley Bridge, County Durham, have been without electricity for three hours.
