A 47-year-old man has died after falling into a river in Worcestershire.

Police said Carl Schmidt, from Pershore, was discovered in the River Avon near Abbey Bridge, Evesham, at about 19:00 BST on Sunday.

Mr Schmidt was taken to hospital but remained unconscious and died on Tuesday.

West Mercia Police are investigating the circumstances of the death and have appealed for people to take care around local rivers during the warmer weather.

Inquest adjourned

Det Insp Mark Loader, from the force, said: "All we ask is that people are aware of the dangers and stick to authorised swimming areas.

"You may think the water looks safe to swim in, but there could be submerged objects like rocks and strong currents which you can't see from the surface.

"Don't enter the water to try and rescue a pet or after consuming alcohol when your judgement is severely impaired.

"This tragedy serves as a reminder to everyone to be wary of the river when out and about and I am renewing previous warnings to help increase public awareness of this safety issue."

An inquest into Mr Schmidt's death has been opened and adjourned.
