Planet Venus is set to move across the face of the Sun as viewed from Earth. The Planet Venus has begun to move across the face of the Sun as viewed from Earth - a transit that will last more than six hours.
The href="http://www.ras.org.uk/education-and-careers/for-everyone/125" >more than six-and-a-half-hour transit, which starts just after 22:00 GMT (23:00 BST), is a very rare astronomical phenomenon that will not be witnessed again until 2117. It is a href="http://www.ras.org.uk/education-and-careers/for-everyone/125" >very rare astronomical event that will not be seen again for another 105 years.
Observers will position themselves in northwest America, the Pacific, and East Asia to catch the whole event. The Arctic, northwest America, the western Pacific, and eastern Asia will witness the entire passage.
But some part of the spectacle will be visible across a much broader swathe of Earth's surface, weather permitting. Other regions, such as the mainland US, will see the start; while the UK and continental Europe will catch the end.

Scientists are observing the transit to test ideas that will help them find Earth-like planets elsewhere in the galaxy, and to learn more about Venus itself.
Venus will appear as a tiny black disc against our star, but no-one should look for it without the proper equipment. These researchers will be equipped with specialist equipment which allows them to look directly at the solar disc.
Ordinary members of the public are advised to seek professional help if they want to see the event.
