Version 0 of 1.

A 20-year-old woman was subjected to a serious sexual assault by a man who she and her friends met by chance in St Andrews, police said.

The attacker befriended the group of women early on Saturday as they made their way home from a night out.

He accompanied them back to a house in the town, where the assault took place.

Fife Police have appealed for anyone who saw the man talking to the women in Church Square between 0100 BST and 0200 BST to come forward.

The attacker was said to be in his twenties, about 5ft 6in tall, with a short tidy hairstyle. He was wearing a red T-shirt with white stripes on the sleeves and dark jeans.

Unpleasant attack

Det Insp Lee Dickson, who is heading the investigation, said it was possible that the man was not local.

The number of people in the town has been swelled by the ongoing Dunhill Links Championship golf tournament.

He said: "This was a particularly unpleasant attack which has left the young victim extremely shocked and we are appealing to the public to help us catch the man responsible as quickly as possible."

Police are checking CCTV film for any footage of the victim and her attacker.
