Northfields street attack murder victim named

A man who died a week after being attacked in a Leicester street has been named by police.

Ponnuthurai Nimalaraja, known by family and friends as Nimal, was found in the Northfields area shortly after 23:00 BST on 9 June.

The 41-year-old, from Leicester, died at the Queen's Medical Centre in Nottingham on Saturday morning.

Six boys and a girl, aged between 13 and 15, were arrested in connection with assault and released on bail.

Det Ch Insp Matt Hewson, from the East Midlands Special Operations Unit Major Crime, said: "This is now being treated as a murder investigation so I would urge anyone with information to call us immediately."

Mr Nimalaraja was found with serious head injuries at the junction of Gypsy Lane and Northfield Road.

Police want to speak to anyone who was in Gypsy Lane between 22:30 and 23:15 BST on 9 June.
