Details of the attack are unclear. The Yemeni defence ministry said Gen Qatan had been travelling in a three-car convoy when the bomber threw himself at the general's SUV and detonated his explosives.
One report citing witnesses said the attacker approached Gen Qatan - Yemen's southern army commander - as he walked to his office, handed the general a paper, shook his hand and then detonated the explosives. The commander was killed and four security guards and a passer-by seriously wounded, the ministry said.
However, another report quoting officials said the bomber threw himself at the general's vehicle which was in a three-car convoy.
At least four other people were reported to be wounded in the attack.
Militants quoted by the Chinese news agency Xinhua on Monday claimed they had assassinated Gen Qatan in response to the army offensive in the south.
