Digby 'wanted to be Tory mayor' Digby rubbishes Tory mayor claim
(10 minutes later)
Labour's new trade minister Sir Digby Jones approached the Conservatives about standing as their London mayoral candidate, the Tories claim. Labour minister Sir Digby Jones has described as "rubbish" claims he approached the Conservatives about standing as their mayoral candidate.
Mr Jones "expressed an interest" in becoming the Tories' candidate two months ago, a Tory spokesman said. He said he had a conversation with Tory leader David Cameron two months ago about next year's mayoral contest.
The former CBI chief then had a conversation with Tory leader David Cameron but it was taken no further. But he said he would only consider standing as an independent - not as a member of the Conservative Party.
Mr Jones was made a Labour minister but has not joined the party. He was unavailable for comment. The former CBI chief has since been made a Labour trade minister but has refused to join the party.
