Homeowners in flood-hit areas of East and South Yorkshire are bracing themselves for more rain this week as the clean-up operation continues.

Forecasters predict more showers, some heavy, over the next few days.

About 500 Environment Agency staff were still in the worst-affected areas near Doncaster, South Yorkshire and Hull, East Yorkshire monitoring water levels.

An Environment Agency spokesman said: "We will not leave until until the flood risk has completely abated."

He said that despite flood water receding in many of the worst-hit areas, the ground remained saturated and vulnerable to sustained wet weather.

If we were to get some intense long-term rain it wouldn't take long for flood water to come back Environment Agency spokesman

"We are closely monitoring water levels and are expecting some more rain this week but we are not expecting a downpour," he said.

"We have 500 staff still in place helping check flood defences and rain levels. It is not over yet, that is for sure.

"With saturating levels what they are, if we were to get some intense long-term rain it wouldn't take long for flood water to come back."

Meanwhile, Doncaster Council is giving out cleaning materials to help residents moving back into their flood-damaged homes.

Mops, buckets, disinfectant and protective suits, gloves and masks will be available for collection from the library in Bentley from Monday.

Weather experts expected it to remain cloudy for the rest of the week with showers on Wednesday evening into Thursday.
