Seven hurt in bus station crash One dead after bus station crash
(about 3 hours later)
Six people have been taken to hospital and one person has been treated at the scene after being hurt in a bus crash in the West Midlands. A 66-year-old woman has died in hospital after two buses collided at a bus station in the Black Country.
The vehicles collided at Walsall bus station in the town centre earlier. It is thought an Arriva bus went the wrong way down a one-way street. She was one of six people taken to hospital after the accident at the bus station in Walsall town centre.
A police spokesman said: "It's believed a number of vehicles were involved including two buses." It is thought a single-decker Arriva bus went the wrong way down a one-way street and collided with a double-decker and three other cars.
A woman in her 60s was airlifted to hospital with leg injuries. Police said the woman was a pedestrian. A 59-year-old woman is in a serious but stable condition in hospital.
The driver of the single decker Arriva, which collided with a Travel West Midlands bus, is also thought to have been hurt.
Bridge Street in the town is closed and the town centre is reported to be gridlocked.
Far worse
Police said among the injured were a 66-year-old woman, who was in a critical condition in hospital, and a 59-year-old woman who was in a serious condition.
A West Midlands Ambulance spokesman said as well as the woman who was airlifted to hospital, another two women also received leg injuries and three men in their 40s suffered minor injuries.
Another person was treated for shock.
He added the injuries could have been far worse given the number of vehicles involved.
Witness Dominic Leadbetter said: "There were at least two or three people being treated by ambulance people inside the terminal.
"The bus came out of the terminal and ended up against a double decker bus and a van from a local restaurant.
"The air ambulance landed on the road outside the bus station, and the police have sealed off the bus station."
'Bangs and screams'
Another eye witness said both buses had a lot of passengers on board.
He said: "I heard some loud bangs and then some screams. I have never heard anything like it.
"The bus hit a van and a car and it was only stopped by the number 51 bus, a Travel West Midlands bus."
He added he saw three people lying on the floor, one of whom seemed to have a head injury and another with ripped trousers.
Arriva Midlands spokesman Keith Myatt said information was still sketchy: "We are aware of an incident with one of our buses colliding with another bus and other vehicles near Walsall bus station.
"We are awaiting information from our local manager from our Cannock depot where the bus was from.
"We are aware there are several casualties, but we are not aware of the severity. We are working with the police on this."
