England to qualify, says McClaren McClaren expects Zagreb backlash
(about 1 hour later)
Steve McClaren remains confident England will qualify for the Euro 2008 finals despite slumping to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat to Croatia. Steve McClaren is bracing himself for a media mauling after England slumped to an embarrassing 2-0 defeat to Croatia.
"There are enough points to play for so we'll be okay," said McClaren, whose side have picked up just one point in their last two Group E games. "I knew that was part of the job when I took over," McClaren told BBC Radio Five Live after the Zagreb humiliation. "I've seen it for the last five years.
"I have to accept that criticism, because it is my responsibility. I pick the players and I pick the system.
"If we win I accept the plaudits, but if we lose I accept the criticism. I'm not going to shy away from it."
McClaren added: "But it just makes me more determined and the players to turn it around."
England have picked up just one point in their last two Group E games, but McClaren remained bullish over his side's chances of reaching the Euro 2008 finals.
"There are enough points to play for so we'll be okay.
"It's going to be difficult. Everyone has opinions, but I've said to theplayers we've got to stick together."It's going to be difficult. Everyone has opinions, but I've said to theplayers we've got to stick together.

McClaren added: "We've had two disappointing games and collected one point andit's not good enough.
"We should win our home games, then come away to here and try to get a pointor sneak a win.
"We haven't done that, we move on."
"We picked a system and got all our experienced players here and our characters here and had chances in the game, but in the end it wasn't to be.
"We are all very, very disappointed but this group still has a long way togo.
"We play Croatia last - let's hope we reverse the score."
