Four people are missing and feared dead after a landslide tore through a remote Canadian town in British Columbia.

At least three homes were destroyed in Johnson's Landing, with search and rescue teams resuming work on Friday at 07:00 PST (14:00 GMT)

Efforts were suspended for a short time on Thursday afternoon because of instability above the search area.

The area has received a record amount of rain during the last month, a spokesman said.

But it is too early to say rain was the major factor in the slide, Bill Macpherson from the Central Kootenay Emergency Operations Center said.

Two search and rescue teams along with geological and landslide experts resumed work on Friday, but the landslide has cut electricity in the town as well as blocked off the main road.

"In 40 seconds, the entire landscape changed," Richard Ortega, a neighbour, told Canadian broadcaster CBC.

Royal Canadian Mounted Police Corporal Dan Moskaluk told CBC that rescue crews were "realistically" looking at a recovery operation. "But again, we never lose hope."
