Middlesbrough Bus Station is to close for £1.5m worth of refurbishment work.

The work to improve its accessibility will begin on Monday 16 July and is expected to last four to six weeks.

Alternative facilities will be made available nearby and Middlesbrough Council said it would keep users informed throughout.

The project is part of the Tees Valley Bus Network Improvement Scheme which will see a £57m investment in improvements across the area.

Middlesbrough councillor Nicky Walker said: "We're committed to making public transport as efficient and accessible as possible, and this scheme will mean Middlesbrough Bus Station is one of the best facilities of its kind in the region."

Work will see the reconstruction of the external concourse area and part-reconstruction of the ramps to the upper deck, dropping the carriageway level to create low floor stops at the majority of the local bus stands within the bus station.

Automatic doors are also being introduced at each of the stands.

The 21 local bus stands and the express coach stand will be relocated to temporary sites elsewhere in the town centre.
