So Apple charges $20 every year for what amount to service packs, said service packs break older software (assuming the user was even able to install it), and yet I'm expected to believe that Macs are better because "they just work." Thanks but no thanks, I'll pay $30 once for Win7 over $20 every year for OSX.So Apple charges $20 every year for what amount to service packs, said service packs break older software (assuming the user was even able to install it), and yet I'm expected to believe that Macs are better because "they just work." Well of course that thread is growing. That's where everyone that has a problem is going to moan. I don't see why that's any reason to somehow frame the whole thing as a disaster; people with issues will moan, and loudly, on the internet. Big deal. Try again later. I have news for you. Not everyone has issues. In fact I was using beta releases of ML for weeks without issues. Some people just have bad luck with their setup. Happens with every flavour of every OS for every machine by any manufacturer you care to mention, ever, whenever there's a big release, and there's always someone who uses a different kind of macine ready to gloat.I have news for you. The only thing which is pathetic, is that they simply haven't got enough bandwidth to deal with all the downloads. It's the same issue with every major release. With this in mind, people should realise that this is the problem if their download doesn't start of shows errors, and simply try later, as like you said, the world isn't going to end if you can't download ML.The only thing which is pathetic, is that they simply haven't got enough bandwidth to deal with all the downloads. You're funny meestersmeeth. Generally you are in the "it just works" category. When I look in the Apple user forums, peek in the update releases, and listen to the moaning of our system admins.
I have told you this before, and I am telling you this again as we are in the same situation: the fact that your updating went well, doesn't mean that it will go well for everyone else. The majority will have no issues, but Mac-users seem to be less aware of the risks of updating an operating system, so it's better to be warned about discovered issues, and know if it can affect you.

It's to be expected really. Downloading the OS is so easy nowadays. You go to the App store app. Click the icon and it starts. Meaning that a huge chunk of the Mac community starts at pretty much the same time. For me I had the 'try again later' error and it went away when I tried at a less peak time an hour or so later.

Been upgrading all the way through from 10.1 to 10.8 with no real problems, just a few out of date apps and preference panes. There will be some people in the millions of up-graders that will have problems. This is usually resolved with a clean install. People install all sorts of stuff, hard drives get corrupted as do files in the course of a year. They go onto Apple discussions to get help and usually find help. There is no story here.
I hope win8 goes a smooth.

Less aware than whom? Most Mac users are probably former (and very likely current) Windows users, so I don't see that they would me any less aware of the issues than you or I. OS X is an operating system, written by humans, packaged by humans, just as z/OS, Windows, or AIX are. So of course we need to be able to find out what problems others have had and learn from their experience. But meestersmeeth is right that some people (not you!) do seem to gloat at the problems that others have with different products from the ones they use. A depressing side to human nature, and one that I am guilty of only in the context of football.Less aware than whom? Usually trolling BS - spec up similar machines and you won't get a price too different - as an example the Ultrabooks cannot touch a MacBook Air for specs, build quality or support. You also forget that your Windows laptop is more or less worthless in 3 years time - I can sell my MacBook pro 3 years old for £700.Usually trolling BS - spec up similar machines and you won't get a price too different - as an example the Ultrabooks cannot touch a MacBook Air for specs, build quality or support. When a popular version of linux called ubuntu is released , the demand is high and the traditional servers can sometimes be overloaded.Thankfully its also released via bit torrent ,this is very useful as it spreads the load across many more machines to cope much better. When a popular version of linux called ubuntu is released , the demand is high and the traditional servers can sometimes be overloaded.Thankfully its also released via bit torrent ,this is very useful as it spreads the load across many more machines to cope much better.

Integrating Facebok and Twitter into the core OS, now where have I seen that before.
Its a good job Microsoft are more friendly than Apple is with Samsung.

But £20 per year for a decent OSX upgrade, is probably better value than £100+ every three years for Windows upgrade, and can acccept that typicaly OSX probably works better on the narrow Mac based system hardware base. It will be interesting to see if Windows 8 will be any more reliable. So far its looking pretty rock solid, and I would expect MS servers to be similarly overloaded on Release day.But £20 per year for a decent OSX upgrade, is probably better value than £100+ every three years for Windows upgrade, and can acccept that typicaly OSX probably works better on the narrow Mac based system hardware base. So Apple charges $20 every year for what amount to service packs, said service packs break older software (assuming the user was even able to install it), and yet I'm expected to believe that Macs are better because "they just work." Thanks but no thanks, I'll pay $30 once for Win7 over $20 every year for OSX.So Apple charges $20 every year for what amount to service packs, said service packs break older software (assuming the user was even able to install it), and yet I'm expected to believe that Macs are better because "they just work." Pure comedy gold, the old 'service packs' line from a Windows fan about Mac OS X. Releasing Mountain Lion just one year after Lion is a new approach for Apple but that's reflected in the low price. Apple release the equivalent of Microsofts service packs on a regular basis, for free. That's why Tiger finished on 10.4.11 (11 free updates), Leopard finished on 10.5.8, Snow Leopard on 10.6.8, even Lion has reached 10.7.4.Pure comedy gold, the old 'service packs' line from a Windows fan about Mac OS X. We get it you are a Windows fan, good for you, but please stop spouting this nonsense about Mac OS X when you clearly don't have a clue about it.We get it you are a Windows fan, good for you, but please stop spouting this nonsense about Mac OS X when you clearly don't have a clue about it.

I've just installed it this evening with no problems. Took about 1.5 hours altogether. I did think about leaving off for a bit as there would be such high demand. Which there is bound to be for a low cost update that is so easy to install. I left my work windows PC installing updates the other day and it was still doing it the next morning!I've just installed it this evening with no problems. Took about 1.5 hours altogether.
