A driver is being treated after his coach hit a lamppost and careered up an embankment. The driver of a coach which crashed on the A1 on Tyneside died after suffering a heart attack at the wheel, police have said.
It is believed none of the passengers on board the coach has been seriously hurt and the driver has suffered minor injuries, Northumbria Police said. None of the passengers on the 60-seater bus were seriously hurt when it crashed into a lamppost and came to rest on an embankment at Lobley Hill, Gateshead.
The crash happened on the A1 Western bypass, southbound near Lobley Hill in Gateshead at 10:45 BST. The coach was taking a group of adults and children to the Lake District.
Officers said paramedics were at the scene and passengers were still on board the coach but not trapped. Police said the 74-year-old driver was taken to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital in Gateshead but later died.
The road is closed and diversions are in place. The road was closed for several hours while the vehicle, owned by Bells of Stamfordham in Northumberland, was recovered.
No one from the bus company was available for comment.
A Northumbria Police spokeswoman said the identity of the driver was being withheld until relatives had been informed.
