Version 0 of 1.

The leader of a criminal syndicate operating in the volatile region of Chéran, in the state of Michoacán, was found slain on Tuesday, according to the state attorney’s office. A military patrol found the leader, Mauricio Cuitláhuac Hernández, near a burning van in the town of Santa María Urapicho. Residents of Cherán have been struggling to drive out armed illegal loggers who they say have destroyed their forests and tormented their families under the protection of cartel henchmen for months. The government deployed 600 police officers to Michoacán this week. No suspects have been named in the killing.

Correction: August 23, 2012

<p>A report in some copies of the World Briefing column on Aug. 15 about a criminal syndicate leader in Mexico whose body was found near a burning van misidentified, using information from the state attorney’s office, the town in the state of Michoacán where the discovery was made. It is Santa María Urapicho, not Ocumicho.
