Duran Duran have cancelled a third consecutive concert in the US after keyboard player Nick Rhodes fell ill.

The band had been due to play in Pittsburgh and Atlantic City over the weekend and had hoped to be back on stage in Ohio on Tuesday.

But doctors told Rhodes he was not ready to play, saying the illness could be the result of a viral infection.

"I feel completely helpless over the situation and all I can do is apologise to our fans," Rhodes said.

"We would never let them down unless it was totally unavoidable," he added in a statement on Sunday announcing the cancellation of the Pittsburgh show.

"I was hoping that after missing [Atlantic City's] show, I would be feeling up to travelling and performing today.

"But having seen the doctor again first thing this morning, I have been told that I need to continue to rest, pending further tests."

Ticket holders for the cancelled gigs have been advised to hold onto their tickets until further details are announced.

The band said they were hoping to reschedule within the next few days.

Duran Duran are in the final leg of their All You Need Is Now tour, which has been under way since spring 2011.

They were forced to postpone a string of dates on the UK leg last summer after singer Simon Le Bon was forced to rest his voice while being treated for ongoing throat problems.
