'Hijacked' plane lands at Dutch airport Plane hijack rumours lead to drama at Dutch airport
(35 minutes later)
A passenger plane reported to have a hijacker and hostages on board has landed at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport. A passenger plane was forced to land at Amsterdam's Schiphol airport and boarded by Dutch forces amid fears of a hijacking that proved unfounded.
The Dutch defence ministry earlier scrambled F-16 fighters to intercept the plane, which had apparently taken off from Malaga. Dutch F-16 fighters were scrambled to intercept the aircraft, en route from Malaga, Spain.
According to the Reuters news agency, Dutch military police say security forces have now surrounded the plane with the passengers still on board. Once it landed at Schiphol it was boarded by armed security forces who discovered the false alarm.
Police have confirmed that they believe this is a hostage situation. A miscommunication between the pilot and the control tower reportedly triggered the confusion.
But Spanish airline Vueling, which reportedly owns the plane, has denied reports that it has been hijacked. "There was never any danger. There was a lack of communication between the pilot and the tower and the airport has activated the security protocol," a spokeswoman for Spanish carrier Vueling told Reuters news agency.
A spokesperson for the company told Reuters that the confusion is due to miscommunication between the pilot and the control tower. Dutch broadcaster NOS spoke to a passenger who said the situation on board had been "calm".
It was the second drama at the airport on Wednesday.
Earlier, part of Schiphol was been closed and flights delayed after a suspected World War II bomb was discovered by workers digging near Pier C, which connects the main plaza with Departure Hall One.
