Four adults and a child were "lucky to survive" when their speedboat started sinking off the Dorset coast, rescuers have said.

Coastguards said there were no life jackets, flares or radio as the boat started taking on water while anchored off Bournemouth during an air show.

The child was passed to a small yacht before the speedboat sank, leaving the adults in the water on Saturday.

RNLI lifeboats recovered the adults and took them to shore for treatment.

Portland Coastguard watch manager Ros Evans said: "They were very lucky to survive.

"If the lifeboats had not been in the area they would have been unlikely to have kept themselves afloat for long.

"HM Coastguard recommends that motor boaters should wear a life jacket at all times whilst on deck.

"These life jackets should be well maintained and should have a spray hood and whistle if possible."
