A mother whose son took his own life five weeks ago has said she is proud of the response to a suicide awareness event in north Belfast. Hundreds of people turned up to a cross-community soccer tournament at the Waterworks on Wednesday evening. A candlelit vigil followed the event, run by the Public Initiative for the Prevention of Suicide and Self Harm. Charlotte Morrissey, whose son Paul took his own life, said money raised would go towards a 24-hour helpline. "I am just overwhelmed at the turnout of over 700 people, and most of them are young men," she said. "That was the target, to create awareness and let them know there's somebody out there who cares." |
