Poland: Crash Victims’ Bodies Exhumed
http://www.nytimes.com/2012/09/27/world/europe/poland-crash-victims-bodies-exhumed.html Version 0 of 1. Relatives of the victims of the plane crash that killed Poland’s president and 95 others in 2010 are facing the possibility that they buried strangers instead of loved ones. The admission by Polish prosecutors that the remains of one victim, Anna Walentynowicz, were confused with those of another have raised questions about whether other such mistakes were made after the crash near the Russian city of Smolensk, which traumatized Poland and still complicates relations with Russia. Polish prosecutors have ordered that the remains of four victims be exhumed for verification, and lawyers and relatives said they were considering requesting that many more bodies be unearthed. The remains were flown back to Warsaw in metal coffins and handed over to relatives for burial. |
