Mr Maloney told BBC London: "What I was told was that he asked some people to stop smoking and the next thing a gun was pulled and he was shot."
He described Mr Oyebola as a "gentle giant" and said he had done a lot of work in the community to get youngsters into boxing and sport.
"I was absolutely devastated, struck dumb when I heard the news," he said.
