Indians' struggle Indians' struggle
(30 days later)
Congratulations to Jason Burke on his report from Gwalior, India (2 October). Too often the struggle of those demanding their basic rights does not get reported. Too often the picture portrayed of the poor and dispossessed shows them waiting for handouts. This is far from the truth, as demonstrated by the social movement Ekta Parishad, which has organised the 350km march across northern India, as well as many other actions throughout India over the last 20 years. Those who respond do so because they realise that the only way to get their voice heard is to take mass non-violent action. They need our support. This historic march for land, water, forest and housing rights is a fundamental challenge to the government, which prides itself on its economic growth and international standing but has failed to address the needs of half the population.
