Man's murder in Newtownabbey described as 'ruthless and careless' Newtownabbey murder: police investigate drugs links
(about 1 hour later)
The shooting of a 36-year-old man in Newtownabbey on the outskirts of north Belfast has been described as a "ruthless, careless killing". Police are investigating possible links to drugs and the involvement of dissident republican paramilitaries in the murder of a man in Newtownabbey.
The man who died has been named locally as 36-year-old Danny McKay. Danny McKay, 36, was shot at his home in Longlands on the outskirts of north Belfast at 20:30 BST on Thursday.
The attack happened in the Longlands area at about 20:30 BST on Thursday. DCI John McVea said that those who killed them were "ruthless".
It is understood Mr McKay was shot six times and died at the scene. At least two men are believed to have been involved in the attack. "He was known to police, but not particularly well known, whatever Daniel may have done in his life, nothing merits this," he said.
Mr McKay, a father of one, was shot several times as he sat alone on a sofa in his living room and died at the scene. At least two men are believed to have been involved in the attack.
DCI McVea said detectives are pursuing a number of lines of inquiry and said he was not sure that the gunmen could identify themselves as belonging to any one organisation.
"We are keeping an open mind as to who was involved and would appeal to anyone who knows which group or individuals were involved to contact detectives," he added.
