Man shot dead in north Belfast Man shot dead in north Belfast
(about 4 hours later)
A man was shot dead in north Belfast on Thursday night. A man shot dead in north Belfast had been warned to leave Northern Ireland by dissident republicans, it has emerged.
The victim, named locally as Danny McKay and said to be in his 30s, was shot up to nine times outside shops near his home on the Longlands estate at about 8.30pm. There is no suggestion the murder was sectarian. Danny McKay, 36, was shot at least six times by two gunmen outside shops near his home in the Longsland area on Thursday night .
Reports said two gunmen were involved. A car believed to have been used by the killers was later found burnt out in west Belfast. The car was reported to have been hijacked earlier in the New Lodge district of north Belfast. A Volkswagen Bora car used by the killers had been hijacked in the nationalist New Lodge Road area earlier, and was found burnt-out in the Lower Falls district of west Belfast.
The Sinn Féin councillor Gerry O'Reilly said: "The local community is in a state of shock. What is abundantly clear is that those responsible have shown absolute disregard for this community and endangered those nearby through this reckless and dangerous action. It is believed the terror group Óglaigh na hÉireann had issued a death threat against McKay several days ago. Sinn Féin and the Alliance both condemned the shooting.
"I would appeal to anyone with any information to make it known to the PSNI as soon as possible. There can be no justification whatsoever for this type of attack and those behind it need taken off our streets." Less than two hours after the shooting, dissident republicans threw a pipe bomb at a passing police patrol in the west of the city. No one was injured in the blast on the Poleglass estate but 20 families had to be evacuated from their homes as army officers carried out a follow-up operation.
