Indonesia, the world’s most populous Muslim-majority nation, has been battling terrorists since the 2002 bombings in Bali by militants linked to the Southeast Asian network Jemaah Islamiyah, which has links to Al Qaeda. The bombings killed 202 people, mostly foreign tourists. General Aliyus said the police were still investigating whether the group had ties to established terrorist organizations like Jemaah Islamiyah.
Later attacks have killed more than 50 people, mostly Indonesians. The government has arrested more than 700 terror suspects and killed dozens more in an effort to root out militants.
