Derry beat competition from Birmingham, Norwich and Sheffield to win the title for 2013 - the first time it has ever been awarded. The Managing Director of Derry's Inner City Trust, Helen Quigley, said it was a great news story for the city.
"We are not very far out now from City of Culture," she said.
"Derry City Council will have identified the specific areas and buildings they want to work on.
"I imagine the money will be spent in and around the city centre which includes Spencer Road.
"£500,000 is quite a significant amount of money."
