A planned visitor centre on the site where the Magna Carta was sealed in Surrey will boost tourism and the local economy, Runnymede council has said.

Runnymede's corporate management committee has agreed to progress the project subject to final terms being agreed with Surrey County Council.

Last month, the county council pledged £5m towards the visitor centre.

Councillor Patrick Roberts, Runnymede council leader, said it was a "great opportunity".

"It will be a great opportunity for us to work in partnership on what will be a fantastic legacy to mark the landmark date of the 800th anniversary of the sealing of the Magna Carta," he said.

The 800th anniversary celebrations will take place in 2015.
