The Essex fire department was alerted to the blaze at 5:15am. The assistant divisional officer, Leigh Corke, said the oil, about 30,000 tonnes of paper and 30,000 litres of diesel were alight. The incident commander, Mark Samuels, said he expected the fire to be extinguished by 11am. "Firefighters have been aggressively fighting the fire with foam. This is a yard that recycles various types of used oils, hence the intensity of the fire.
