Firefighters have rescued two men from the roof of their truck following flooding in Merseyside.

The pair were stranded in 5ft (1.5m) high water when a road flooded in Bootle in the morning.

Firefighters from Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service used an inflatable to pull the men to safety.

A number of houses as well as a local fire station in the Huyton area were struck by lightning during the storms and reported problems with flooding.

A spokeswoman for Merseyside Fire and Rescue Service said: "The weather seems to have caused lots of problems.

"We have had a lot of calls regarding lightning strikes and localised flooding."
