An eyewitness said the search appeared to be close to shore.
Alan Graham, who runs the Orsay Inn overlooking Lochcarnan, said: "We could see the Stornoway helicopter circling. It appeared to be searching.
"The area they appeared to be searching is quite far in Lochcarnan. The area is fairly close to the jetty and pier."
He said the weather had deteriorated following what had been a good summer.
Mr Graham said: "The visibility is not as good as it has been."
