The crash happened shortly before noonlocal time, in the region of Moselle. The crash happened at about 1145 local time (1045 GMT) in the region of Moselle.

Philippe Mirville, a spokesman for SNCF, told AP news agency the train had switched lines because the track it was travelling on was being repaired, and collided head-on with an oncoming freight train.
"We are faced with an important and dramatic situation," Eric Soupra, a local civil security official, told French radio.
Some of the wounded were trapped in the wreckage and would have to be cut out, he said.
Transport Minister Dominique Perben was travelling to the scene.
