A Taliban spokesman said an attack was launched on the airfield in Jalalabad at around 06:00 (01:30 GMT) on Sunday. Afghan police officials told the BBC that as many as five suicide attackers targeted the base in Jalalabad, and witnesses said that gunfire was heard.
The spokesman also said that some Taliban fighters had entered the area and that fighting was taking place, but that has not been confirmed. The Taliban claimed that some of its fighters had entered the area - but this has not been confirmed.
