A man has been killed in a "cold-blooded" shooting in Liverpool, police said.

Jamie Starkey, 21, was shot several times as he left his house in Higher Lane, Fazakerley, to go to his car at 20:00 GMT on Sunday.

Mr Starkey had recently been released from prison after shooting a man on New Year's Day 2008, detectives said.

Ch Supt Jon Ward, of Merseyside Police, said: "There is no doubt that this was a targeted shooting."

He added: "Whoever did this meant to kill Jamie Starkey. We believe that some members of the criminal fraternity will know who did this and will know what lies behind it.

"Jamie Starkey was just 21 years old and should have been looking forward to his future, but he chose a path which has ultimately led to his death."

The killer, a man wearing dark clothing, ran off towards nearby playing fields, police said.

Patrols have been increased in the area and house-to-house inquiries are being carried out.
