Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said the helicopter had taken off from Carnforth, Lancashire, on Friday night bound for a destination in Scotland. Police said the helicopter had taken off from Carnforth, Lancashire, at about 1900 BST on Friday bound for Lochmaben, near Lockerbie, in Scotland.
Emergency services were called to the scene of the crash by a farmer at 1122 BST. The area has now been cordoned off by firefighters. A search operation involving police, coastguards, mountain rescue teams and an RAF helicopter was mounted when the helicopter failed to arrive.
A search involving two RAF helicopters and Cumbria Police was already under way before a farmer reported the accident. Emergency services were called to the scene at 1122 BST by a farmer who spotted the crashed helicopter while out checking his stock.
A spokesman for Cumbria Fire and Rescue Service said two bodies were found in the helicopter and two were in the field nearby. The area has been cordoned off by firefighters from Kendal and Milnthorpe stations.
