England to experiment in warm-up Flintoff impresses on his return
(about 15 hours later)
England get the chance to try all options in their one-day squad in Thursday's warm-up match against a Rajasthan Cricket Association XI. England captain Andrew Flintoff smashed a half-century against Rajasthan Cricket Association on his return after three months out with injury.
Up to 13 of the 14-man squad will be allowed to play ahead of Sunday's Champions Trophy opener against India. Batting at three, he hit 59 from 53 balls including nine fours and a six in England's warm-up match before their Champions Trophy begins on Sunday.
England will be keen to see fast bowlers Steve Harmison and James Anderson return from injuries. After 23 overs, England had reached 144-3, Ian Bell out for 53.
And spin all-rounder Jamie Dalrymple is looking to build on an impressive start to his international career. Rajasthan CA won the toss and elected to field and had Andrew Strauss dismissed for one.
He made his debut in the 5-0 one-day whitewash to Sri Lanka but was part of an improved England performance a 2-2 series tie with Pakistan. Strauss nicked behind off Shalandu Gehlot in the second over and Flintoff, who had ankle surgery in the summer, fell when he mis-hit a drive to offer a simple catch to mid-off.
"It sounds like an old, tired cliché but it hasn't all completely sunk in," said Dalrymple of his transition from county player to England team member. The match will enable England to try all options as up to 13 of the 14-man squad will be allowed to play ahead of Sunday's Champions Trophy opener against hosts India.
"I am sure it will at the weekend when there are 50,000 Indians yelling at us.
"I have not really sat back and analysed it before. I have just always tried to do what I did in county cricket to get me the opportunity."
Andrew looks as if he is raring to go but the main objective for him was to come out here to bat and lead the side Duncan Fletcher
Dalrymple and left-armer Mike Yardy have been able to take tips from veteran Ashley Giles, who is training with the squad as he continues his recovery from groin surgery.
Captain Andrew Flintoff could open the batting in the warm-up as England explore ways of filling in for the absence of Marcus Trescothick.
Flintoff has joined England's bowlers in the nets in Jaipur this week but is still not expected to rush his recovery from an ankle injury.
Fletcher said: "Andrew has been out for some time and it looks as if he is raring to go.
"But the main objective for him was to come out here to bat and lead the side.
"It is difficult to say when he will bowl, it is very important he is ready to bowl flat-out in Brisbane [in the first Ashes Test] but we will have to monitor things as the tour progresses here."
