The body was discovered in the water in Broxburn, near the bridge at Holmes Court, by a member of the public on Saturday morning. The body was discovered in a burn near the bridge at Holmes Court, by a member of the public at about 09:00.
A team of officers is now working to discover his identity and establish the circumstances leading up to his death. The name of the man, who had been described as white and middle-aged, has not been released.
He is described as white, middle-aged, with short or balding hair. He was wearing a tan or brown jacket. Officers have yet to establish the circumstances surrounding the man's death and were appealing for anyone with information to contact them.
He was also wearing a gold chain. In particular, police are keen to hear from anyone who thinks they may have heard a disturbance or seen anyone in the water near to where he was found, between Friday afternoon and Saturday morning.
Lothian and Borders Police said officers were also conducting door-to-door inquiries of properties in the surrounding areas and trawling CCTV to trace the man's route.
Det Insp Stuart Houston, from Lothian and Borders Police, said: "I would appeal to anyone who may recognise the description of the man, or who thinks they saw someone of his description in the Broxburn area last night, to get in touch with us as soon as possible.
"Similarly, I would ask that anyone who might have been in the Holmes Court or Holmes Park area, may have heard a disturbance sometime between Friday evening and the body being discovered on Saturday morning, to let us know.
"There may well be a family missing a son, brother or partner who are worried sick and, with Christmas approaching, we want to find this man's next of kin as soon as we can."
