Pleasure boat stuck under Chertsey Bridge Pleasure boat stuck under Chertsey Bridge
(about 21 hours later)
A pleasure boat has become stuck while trying to pass under a bridge on the River Thames in Surrey. The crew of a luxury pleasure boat had to be rescued after it became stuck while trying to pass under a bridge on the River Thames in Surrey.
Chertsey Bridge, which has seven arches, has been closed to traffic in both directions while the emergency services try to release the vessel. Chertsey Bridge was closed to traffic in both directions from about 13:00 GMT on Saturday after the vessel collided with one of the arches.
Surrey Fire and Rescue Service said two fire engines and a fire boat were sent to the scene just before 13:00 GMT. Two fire engines and a fire boat were sent to the scene, where ropes were used to rescue the two people on board.
Two people were on board the boat, which is thought to have misjudged the height of the flood-swollen river. The bridge was checked by a structural engineer and reopened at 21:40 GMT.
A spokeswoman for the fire service said crews were waiting for the arrival of a building inspector to assess any structural damage of the bridge. The 40ft vessel, thought to be worth about £500,000, is believed to have misjudged the height of the flood-swollen river.
Traffic is heavy in the area as a result of the closure, with motorists being diverted through Staines. It was towed away to be assessed for damage.
