Seven people have been arrested after a police officer was attacked in the street, Lancashire Police have said.

The males, aged between 14 and 32 and all from Preston, Lancashire, were arrested on suspicion of wounding.

Police said the PC was knocked unconscious while on patrol in Avenham, Preston, on Saturday night.

He is now recovering at home after being treated for cuts and bruises at the Royal Preston Hospital, a spokesman said.

The attack happened at about 20:00 GMT in the Duke Street and Albyn Bank Road area of Avenham.

A force spokesman said the policeman was struck from behind and knocked to the ground after approaching a group of around 10 youths.

Detective Chief Inspector Ian Dawson said: "This was a disgraceful incident against a highly respected police officer who was simply doing his job and trying to keep the community safe.

"Our investigation is still ongoing and a number of other people are actively being sought.

"I would urge anybody who was in the Avenham area around 8pm last night who thinks they may have witnessed this assault or with any information that could assist with our investigation to come forward."

He added: "Fortunately incidents of this nature are rare but they will not be tolerated and we need the public's help to bring those responsible to justice."
