After the Vauxhall helicopter crash (Report, 17 January), London mayor Boris Johnson praised the response of the emergency services, including firefighters, dozens of whom arrived within four minutes of the 999 calls. For the capital's firefighters, and many residents, the words will seem like hypocrisy, given his proposed £45m in "savings" by 2015 from the London Fire Emergency and Planning Authority (LFEPA) budget. The cuts are a threat to the continued operation of 12 fire stations – including Knightsbridge and Southwark, in close proximity to Vauxhall – and more than 500 firefighters' jobs. While packaged as a means to the mayor's goal of shaving pennies off the GLA's share of council tax bills, the ongoing attack on the fire service in London and nationally is an integral part of the coalition's assault on the public sector. | After the Vauxhall helicopter crash (Report, 17 January), London mayor Boris Johnson praised the response of the emergency services, including firefighters, dozens of whom arrived within four minutes of the 999 calls. I will join FBU members on 21 January when they lobby the LFEPA HQ in Southwark to demand a halt to cuts that threaten lives as well as livelihoods.
