Bristol hit-and-run: 'Shock' at cyclists' deaths Tandem crash car 'being pursued' by police
(35 minutes later)
Residents have spoken of their shock at the deaths of two cyclists in an apparent hit-and-run crash in Hanham near Bristol. A car involved in an apparent hit-and-run with a couple on a tandem bicycle was being pursued by police at the time, it has emerged.
A man and a woman, believed to be on a tandem, were killed on Lower Hanham Road just before 16:00 GMT. Ross Simons, 32, and his wife Clare, 30, died at the scene of the incident in Hanham, near Bristol, on Sunday.
The driver of a Citroen car involved in the crash fled the scene. A 38-year-old man later handed himself in to police. The matter has been referred to the police watchdog, the IPCC.
Andrea Swerley, 28, who lives nearby, said: "It's just a shock, nothing like this has happened here before." Police arrested a 38-year-old man on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and a 35-year-old woman, 35, on suspicion of dangerous driving.
She added: "We got home and saw a helicopter in the air overhead and looking up the road, which they were just closing, we could see lots of police." Avon and Somerset Police said an officer was alerted to a Citroen Picasso travelling along Lower Hanham Road at speed, shortly before 16:00 GMT on Sunday.
'Rapid response' A spokesman said the officer indicated to the car to stop but it made off.
The landlord of The Queens Head pub, Patrick Murphy, said: "It's just not nice that this has happened around here." The officer began to follow the car but lost sight of it.
Officers set up a cordon round the scene of the crash and closed the road. Police said that shortly afterwards the car stuck another vehicle and then collided with the cyclists.
Numerous investigators scoured the area and two white tents were set up in the street. Insp Frazer Davey said: "Following investigations overnight the circumstances of this collision have become much clearer.
A spokesperson for Great Western Ambulance Service said: "We sent an ambulance, paramedics, a rapid response vehicle and had an officer at the scene to liaise with the other services. But unfortunately both the patients were beyond help at the scene." "However I would appeal to anyone who witnessed this incident or saw this car in the area shortly before the collision to come forward and contact us.
Detectives said the 38-year-old man who handed himself in at a police station has been arrested and will be questioned later. "This is a tragic incident in which two people have needlessly lost their lives. Our thoughts and deepest sympathies are with their families."
Officers have appealed for information about the crash.
