Airport operations manager Richard Pace said: "The KLM aircraft, a Fokker 70, circled the airport to burn off fuel before landing and our emergency procedures were put in place.
"The aircraft landed safely and normally. It then taxied to the stand to allow passengers to disembark."
There has been a minimal effect on airport operations, with just a few delays, and everything has returned to normal, Mr Pace said.
The incident, from the captain reporting the alert to the passengers returning to the terminal, lasted less than an hour.
