Russia Cancels Agreement With U.S. Russia Cancels Agreement With U.S.
(35 minutes later)
Prime Minister Dmitri A. Medvedev said Wednesday that Russia would cancel a decade-long agreement with the United States that called for cooperation on law enforcement efforts including drug control and combating human trafficking. The termination of the agreement was the latest example of strained relations between the United States and Russia. Relations between the two countries have been particularly troubled since December, when the United States adopted a law aimed at punishing Russian human rights abusers. Aleksei Pushkov, a Parliament member, said that the agreement was outdated and that Russia could afford to fight crime on its own. Russian officials also announced that they would ban certain frozen meat and meat products from the United States because of evidence farmers were using an artificial growth stimulant called ractopamine.
