Ski resort cook Lucy Sallis drowns in Alps pool | Ski resort cook Lucy Sallis drowns in Alps pool |
(about 1 hour later) | |
A 19-year-old West Sussex teenager working as a cook in the French Alps has drowned in an outdoor swimming pool at the Alpe d'Huez ski resort.
Lucy Sallis, of Bognor Regis, had jumped into the water with a friend following a night out.
She swam into a covered area of the heated pool but failed to resurface.
French police believe she got into difficulties because there was not enough oxygen between the water and the swimming pool cover.
Friends of the girl, who was a cook at Belle Aurore hotel, recovered her body from under the tarpaulin cover.
'Climbed over fence' | |
Police are not treating the incident as suspicious. | Police are not treating the incident as suspicious. |
A police spokesman said: "She was with a friend and they decided to go swimming. They climbed over a big fence around the pool shortly before 5am.
"The pool is divided into two parts - a small basin and a bigger one which are joined together. The small one was not covered.
"They swam in the smaller area but then the girl wanted to swim in the other section.
"Because the pool cover touched the water, we think she drowned as there was no air between the cover and the water."
The results of a post-mortem examination are due to be revealed on Friday.
Ms Sallis had been working for Brighton-based holiday company SkiBound.
'Most perfect girl' | |
Friends have described her on Twitter as "the most perfect girl" and a "beautiful, beautiful girl".
In a statement, SkiBound said: "The thoughts and condolences of all at SkiBound are with the family and friends. All our efforts are focused on ensuring they are supported in any way possible through this very difficult time.
