Residents of a north Dublin estate have been told not to drink the tap water after E. coli was discovered in the supply.

Tankers have now made water available to about 160 homes in the Knocksedan area in Swords.

It is thought the infection has been cleared from the estate but residents are still being advised not to use the tap water.

The local council says it is working to identify the source of contamination.

Fingal councillor Tom Kelleher said a third party had tapped into the supply legally, but had created a "form of backwash" which polluted the system.

"It was a very short-term and limited interference with the system," he said.

"They, (the water service) tell me it is actually clear at the moment but they are obliged to wait for a second analysis."
