The German Defence Ministry denied the dead were soldiers and sources say they were either security guards or federal policemen attached to the embassy. Germany's interior ministry said the three were police officers deployed to Afghanistan in order to protect the German embassy.
The source of the explosion was believed to be an improvised explosive device often used by insurgents.

The head of Kabul police's criminal investigation department, Alishah Paktiawal told the AFP news agency: "There was an explosion. Three people have died and one has been injured." A fourth German officer was wounded but his injuries are not life-threatening.
The German embassy said it could not yet comment. Germany's Interior Minister Wolfgang Schaeuble condemned the "underhanded attack".
Nato's International Security Assistance Force (Isaf) said it was aware of a bomb attack but could not comment on casualties. German investigators were being sent to investigate the explosion, he said.
Foreign Minister Frank-Walter Steinmeier said: "I learned of the deaths of three employees of the German embassy in Kabul with deep sadness and horror.
"Those behind this attack must be investigated and dealt with as soon as possible."
