Police were called to reports of the burglary shortly before 20:30 GMT. Five cars caught fire while five nearby houses also suffered heat damage with cracked windows.
The Audi was then spotted on the East Lancashire Road by a passing police car. Resident Joe Horne said: "We heard a screech and it wasn't so much a boom as a thud."
Another resident Michael Lever added: "I looked up and saw smoke and fire above the houses a street away.
"I got round the corner and saw two cars which looked like they had collided and fire and smoke everywhere."
